Tigarah “Color, Culture, Money, Beauty” Remix Contest banner
The contest banner as it ran across the top of jamglue.com/contests/tigarah, winter 2007 to 2008.
The Tigarah “Color, Culture, Money, Beauty” Remix Contest
On November 27, 2007, Jamglue put up the multitrack session for “Color, Culture, Money, Beauty” by Tigarah, the Tokyo baile-funk MC signed to Universal Music Japan, with Beatstar Music co-sponsoring. Eight stems went online under a Creative Commons license alongside the official contest mix. It was a small contest by Jamglue’s numbers, 130 entries when the voting closed and 170 by the last archived count, and by some distance the most produced one: Tigarah picked both a Grand Prize and a runner-up herself, and then recorded a video announcing the results.
That video is the one piece of this contest that is still playing anywhere. Jamglue posted it to Vimeo in 2008 and it is still there, ninety-four seconds of Tigarah thanking the entrants and reading out the winners.
The Materials
“Here’s what you have to work with.” The contest page listed the official contest mix plus eight separate tracks:
Color, Culture, Money, Beauty - Contest Mixmix 1153617
Acapellatrack 1153613
Drumstrack 1153591
Hornstrack 1153589
Guitartrack 1153583
Basstrack 1153581
Siren and Speedsynthtrack 1153577
Berimbautrack 1153575
Flysynthtrack 1153573
What survives: the track list and the track IDs, from the archived contest page. A berimbau stem in a Japanese baile-funk session is the kind of detail worth keeping, but none of the eight files was ever crawled, so there is no audio to play here.
Licensing. The official rules stated that the tracks were “licensed for use under the Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share Alike 2.5 license (and that all rights that are not expressly granted under this license are reserved by Universal Music Japan),” and that entrants must attribute Tigarah and Universal Music Japan, for example “Remix using elements from Tigarah/Universal Music Japan.” Entries had to be published under the same CC BY-NC-SA 2.5 license.
The Prizes
“Tigarah will pick the Grand Prize winner! The winner will receive a copy of FIFA ’08 plus any Electronic Arts game of their choice, will have their remix featured on Tigarah’s MySpace and Tigarah.net, and will get an autographed Tigarah EP and a limited-edition pin.”
“Tigarah will also pick a Runner-up!” who received FIFA ’08, an autographed EP and a pin; and “You and other Jamglue users will vote for 5 Popular Vote winners!” who each received an autographed EP and a pin.
The official rules put approximate retail values on the three tiers: $138.88 for the Grand Prize, $78.35 for the Runner-up, and $17.98 for each Popular Vote prize. The Grand Prize and Runner-up were the artist’s picks; the five Popular Vote prizes went by “the number of Jamglue users who called the remix ‘A Favorite’.”

What survives: the seven names, the seven titles, an archived mix page for every one of them, and the winner announcement video. The remixes themselves do not. Jamglue put mix downloads behind a sign-in, so no crawler ever reached the audio, and none of these mixes has been found anywhere else.
About Tigarah
The bio that ran on the contest page, quoted from the January 2008 capture:

“After contemplating a career as a politician or ambassador, TIGARAH felt she could best speak her mind if she made music her life. So, shortly after majoring in political science at Tokyo’s renowned Keio University, she started writing lyrics on her own in her tiny room in Tokyo, inspired by the Baile Funk music from Brazil.”

“In several trips to Sao Paulo and Rio, TIGARAH immersed herself in Brazilian culture and recorded music together with local musicians.”

“TIGARAH is all about going against the mainstream in today’s world of mass culture, choosing your own goal in life and going after your dream. TIGARAH’s first album ‘Revolution’ is scheduled for spring 2008... stay tuned!”

The contest page also carried a live clip captioned “Tigarah Live @ Avalon, Roppongi-dori,” embedded from YouTube. That video ID no longer resolves; the caption is all that is left of it.
